#Gen2030 Scholarship – Supporting the Next Generation of Midwives, launched by the Romanian Midwives Association | 32,000 RON in financial support throughout the course of studies

Bucharest, 28 May 2026 – The Romanian Midwives Association launched today the #Gen2030 Scholarship – Supporting the Next Generation of Midwives, dedicated to students admitted to the Midwifery specialisation at the Faculty of Midwifery and Nursing within Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. The scholarship is worth 8,000 RON/year for each of the 4 years of study (32,000 RON in total) and will be awarded by random draw to one person admitted to the Midwifery specialisation in the 2026-2027 academic year.

„A licensed midwife is the professional who cares for babies, adolescents, women, pregnant women and mothers, covering a significant part of reproductive health services. We launched this scholarship to offer financial support, alongside practical support, to those who choose the midwifery profession, because Romania currently needs ten times more midwives to align with European standards. We have only 700 active licensed midwives nationwide, while the actual need is 7,000,” said Irina Mateescu, licensed midwife and President of the Romanian Midwives Association.

„Our country faces a profound crisis in maternal and neonatal health. Data show that the maternal mortality rate is significantly higher than the European average, and infant and neonatal mortality also remain at elevated levels compared to the EU. The same applies to underage mothers, Romania has the highest number of teenage mothers in the European Union. Licensed midwives reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, lower preterm birth rates, increase girls’ and women’s access to maternal and reproductive health services, and contribute to preventing teenage pregnancies and their recurrence. Every licensed midwife means, in practice, support for thousands of pregnant women, newborns, mothers, families, girls and adolescents. Midwifery care can also increase Romania’s birth rate, through prenatal education, supporting natural births in hospitals and promoting a positive birth experience for all mothers,” Irina Mateescu added.

The Association also invites companies and individuals who wish to support future midwives to contribute to the scholarship programme.

„At the moment, we have the resources to offer one scholarship per year. But the crisis we face at a national level is far greater than a single success story. That is why any donation, however small, helps us raise the funds needed to support more students. Companies can contribute through sponsorships or any form of support a student might need, for example, accommodation, IT equipment, study materials, experience exchanges, participation in educational events, and subscriptions to study platforms,” Irina Mateescu added.
